Shopping in Iqaluit is quite interesting. There are two big stores, Arctic Ventures and Northmart. Both sell a very wide range of things, including a lots of fresh fruit and fresh baked goods. They also sell clothes, furniture, hardware items, and so on. They include specialty stores, like Radio Shack. There is no bookstore as such in town, but Arctic Ventures has a good book department, with many books related to Arctic Travel and History.
There are a few of good shops for Inuit art, such as Northern Country Arts and D.J. Sensations. Alternatively, you can just hang out at the Frobisher and wait for the locals to bring their art to you.
However, what the locals do is wait until Friday afternoon and head to the jail! Some of the convicts are allowed to spend their time carving. Because they have plenty of time on their hands, and limited chance to sell their work, you can pick up good carvings there at very reasonable price. The jail is called the Baffin Correctional Centre, and is a five minute taxi ride, or 20 minute walk, west of town along Federal Road, out by the airport.
Another place to buy souvenirs, and support a good cause, is the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, just beside the Library and Visitors Centre, down by the water.
