Hiking from downtown Glasgow to Milngavie (which I strongly recommend) adds another 15 kms. It is a good introduction to long-distance hiking as the trail is well maintained and signposted. There is roofed accommodation available at suitable distances along the trail, but it needs to be booked months in advance. There are some great wild camping spots, but there are also areas where wild camping is not allowed, so careful planning is needed. Most of the hiking is not difficult, though the stretch along the shores of Loch Lomond is rocky and the descent from Conic Hill may strain your knees. The “Devil’s Staircase” ascent is not hard in decent weather. For a couple of days, the hike follows historic cobbled or dirt roads, which makes for easy, rapid hiking.

OUR ITINERARY AND ACCOMMODATION

I hiked the Way from May 10th to 20th, 2026, with three English friends. Handy for the bus and train station. Near the pedestrianized Sauchiehall St.

Friendly and efficient. A good starting and meeting point for people planning to do the West Highland Way, beginning by walking from Glasgow via Kelvingrove Park to Milngavie.

Day 1: Glasgow to Milngavie 3,5 hrs. 10 miles 1,076 ft of ascent

Walk west along the main pedestrianized Sauchiehall Street. There are some hiking stores and some ATMs along the way. The next hiking store is in Tyndrum. Most places will accept cards, but I would carry at least 50 pounds in cash as a backup, since there are very few ATMs on the trail.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images We did not take the tour, but wandered around the gift shop. There is a nice picnic area by a waterfall behind the distillery. The last section, approaching Drymen, is on a minor road.

Drymen is a pretty small village with two pubs and a SPAR supermarket, about 10 minutes west of the trail.

Drymen – Mulberry Lodge Guest Suite

The driveway to the suite is directly on WHW. Five-minute walk into town and supermarket. One room with a double bed, one with two singles. We paid an extra 25 pounds for an additional sofa bed in the upstairs corridor. Big downstairs bathroom with tub, small upstairs bathroom. Nice lounge/library area. Dining area with a fridge and microwave, but no kitchen area or sink. We were told to leave all our dirty dishes in a plastic box. It seems the place used to be used as a BnB. They would serve guests their breakfast in this room. This was OK for making tea and microwaving porridge for breakfast, but we ate in town at the Drymen Inn. This was cheaper and less crowded than the historic Clachan Inn. Strongly recommended for a short stay or if you plan to eat out all the time.

Day 3 Drymen to Rowardennan 7.5 hrs 15.2 mi +2201 -2300 ft

Now the hike begins in earnest. After walking through the woods, the trail starts heading uphill towards Conic Hill (1,118 ft). The trail to the summit is about a 15-minute detour, but well worth it for the expansive views of Loch Lomond. However, even without the detour, there is a long but very well-made path descending to the waterside at Balmaha. This is a pretty small village where you can buy coffee and sandwiches to fortify you for the rest of the day. It is easy to assume that a path beside a lake will be easy, even and level, but it is not. It is scenic, with views of lakes and mountains, beaches and bluebells, but it is also rocky and uneven, making for slow hiking. The trail goes on for a long time, and even when you reach Rowardennan, it is about another 15 minutes’ walk to the Youth Hostel.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images Lomond. This is a beautiful respite, an old house in extensive grounds with great views. Adequate room with bunk beds. Shared shower facility. Good kitchen, but limited food available for purchase on site. The burger came with very salty herbed fries. The breakfast was basic but adequate – yogurt, toast, cereal and fruit with hot drinks and juices.

Day 4, Rowardenann to Inverarnan (Drovers Inn) 7 hr 14.0 miles +1241ft –1270ft

A long but pretty day close to the shore of Loch Lomond for most of the way. The path is surprisingly difficult, with many boulders to scramble over and a lot of small ups and downs. For about ¼ of the route, there are high and low options, but when we did it, the low option was closed for repair. The high option is on a dirt road, so it is level and can be hiked quickly. To be honest, it was a welcome change from struggling along the low road, and there were still some nice lake views.

There is a large hotel at Invernaid. They have a mudroom where you can drop your pack and wet gear before heading to the bar for coffee and cake or a pint. There is also a waterfall and a view of the ferry as it crosses the lake.

Turn off the path at the Beinglas campsite (which has a small store for snacks and drinks) to walk 15 mins to the Drovers Inn. There are no other facilities in Inverarnan, so book dinner at the Drovers.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex They also wear a black t-shirt that claims the Drovers Inn was the Scottish pub of the year in 1705. A cynic might comment that they have never won the award since then, and perhaps even doubt that there was such an award at that time.

It is old. There are water marks on the ceiling. The rooms are full of what has been described as “questionable taxidermy,” including a bear walking upright in a kilt. The window in the shower is held open with a hairbrush. Once we opened the bedroom window, we could not close it again.

The place was fully booked, so the staff were friendly and efficient in a rather rushed sort of way. The rooms were warm and dry, the beds were comfortable, and the showers worked. The food and the drinks were good. They have a range of breakfast options, including a full Scottish with haggis.

16 Day 5 Inverarnan to Tyndrum 5:30 12.0 mi +1645 -948 +ft

A relatively short day going through some wooded areas, marred by quite a bit of clear-cutting. There are some pretty waterfalls near the start of the trail. Take a break there and enjoy them!

Tyndrum is a small and pretty village with a nice restaurant and a pub. There is a petrol (gas) station with a large convenience store attached and a place to buy hiking and camping equipment. The smaller “Key” convenience store a few minutes further along the road also has premade sandwiches and other snacks at a slightly lower price.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery cheapest place we stayed, even after including the six pounds per person to rent a sleeping bag, and you get what you pay for.

The actual hut was warm and dry, and came with a fridge, kettle and microwave. There was a well-maintained communal shower block, and the site claimed to have a “Camper’s Kitchen”. Our needs were very modest: four cups for tea, four bowls for porridge, and four spoons. We could not find them in the kitchen, so we asked nicely twice and were told that they were not items they provided and that we could buy them at a store in town. In desperation, one of us cut the top off a plastic Coke bottle and made tea in it.

Fortunately, there is a nice eating place, The Real Food Café, a 5-minute walk away in town. We went there for fish and chips in the evening and a bacon butty for breakfast. We also had a nice drink in the Tyndrum Inn.

Day 6 Tyndrum to Inveroran 4:00 hr 9.0 mi +899ft – 1063ft

A short and easy day. The route begins paralleling the road at the base of Beinn Dorian.

The route passes the Bridge of Orchy, which consists mainly of a small railway station and a large hotel. It was raining as we got there, so we had a leisurely coffee and cake waiting for the weather to improve. After that, there is a short climb over a ridge before descending into Inveroran and the delightful Inveroran Inn. There are no other facilities, so book dinner at the Inn; it is excellent.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex If you are booking your own West Highland Way trip, book this place first. Not only is it the only place to stay without hiking a 30 km day, it is also excellent!

We were greeted warmly, and our wet gear was taken to be dried. The whole place was very nicely decorated. The bedroom was comfortable, even with four of us sharing it (the only room available when I booked, six months in advance). We had an en-suite shower.

There is a large, comfortable lounge, a small bar area, and a dining room serving excellent food. I had a tasty piece of salmon on a mound of mashed potato, elegantly draped in perfectly cooked vegetables. For breakfast, I had eggs Benedict with salmon, as well as the usual tea and toast.

The location is amazing, by a small road in the middle of nowhere. There is a beer garden with a stream, and a small shop for snacks and drinks. A perfect rest spot!

Day 7 Inveroran to Kingshouse 4hr 15 min 9.4 mi +876 -653ft

Another short day, but the alternative is to combine this day with the previous day and hike 18 miles, which seems a bit much and would miss out on the Inveroran Hotel, a highlight of the trip for us.

The hiking is quicker than we expected, as it is mostly along an old military road with an excellent level surface (if you do not mind some cobbles) that allows for rapid progress through a bleak and wild wilderness. For most of the day, there are no facilities at all. At the end of the hike, there is an opportunity to detour to Glencoe, which has a coffee shop and a campsite.

The Kingshouse facility includes several restaurants, the cheapest of which is the Hikers Bar. There is also a kitchen and laundry in the Bunkhouse. There is no town or village at Kingshouse.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-7 is-layout-flex some grudging respect for it. The building is controversial because a large, expensive hotel was built where a small historic hotel once stood. The booking system was very awkward, and at one stage they claimed that I had not paid in full in advance, as they require, and therefore my four-person bunkroom reservation was cancelled. They offered me the option of a two-person bedroom for 450 pounds. Fortunately, this got straightened out.

We arrived before check-in time and were made to wait in the lounge until 3 pm. I was pleased to find that everything was in order and our bunkroom was available. It is in a separate building from the main hotel. The bunkroom was nicely set up, with individual lockable storage lockers and an electronic room key. The beds were solid, there was room for luggage, and there was a light, a power outlet, and a small table for your phone and wallet beside each bed. There was a small but functional kitchen and dining area, as well as a clean shower block. There were washing and drying machines, but the instructions seemed complicated. They offer free public showers in another building, which must be a boon to anyone wild camping.

The old hotel is converted into a large hiker’s bar. It lacked atmosphere, but it sold cold beer and hot food at reasonable prices. The location on the WHW at Glencoe would have been amazing if not for the heavy traffic on the road. Everyone seemed to be driving a camper van up to Glencoe.

Day 8 Kingshouse to Kinlochleven 4:30 8.9 mi +1,22 -2,001 ft

Another fairly short day. The path begins by following the road but then breaks off to the right to the “Devil’s Staircase”. This short climb does not justify its name in decent weather, but in the past, people seeking work in Kinlochleven would walk this route in winter, when it could be quite dangerous. The path then descends through some woods and follows pipes carrying water from a dam to a power-generating plant in Kinlochleven. This small town was once the centre of the aluminum industry in Scotland. There is a small museum with a movie presentation about the development of hydroelectricity and aluminum manufacture in the area.

The town is quite small, and the pub was fully booked for dinner, so we bought some pasta, sauce and wine from the Co-op and cooked dinner in the well-equipped kitchen of the Blackwater Hostel.

<figure The weather is beginning to warm up, the bluebells are in bloom, there is plenty of daylight, and the midges are not out yet. There is still some snow on the higher peaks, but none on the trail.

The trail was busy but did not feel crowded. In places where there was a lot of the trail visible, we could count about 35 hikers spread over two or three miles. Pubs and restaurants were busy, but it never took more than a few minutes to get a table.

Arrival and departure

There are many ways to get to Glasgow, as it has an airport, a train station and a bus station. It is also easy to get a bus or train back from Fort William to Glasgow.

The official Southern trailhead is Milgavie (pronounced Mull – Guy), but we began in Glasgow.

Two of us flew into Glasgow airport and took the bus into town; one arrived by train from London and the other by overnight bus from Birmingham. We met up in the lobby of the downtown Maldron hotel. This is a nice, modern hotel, conveniently located near the bus and train stations.

There are trains and buses from Glasgow to Milngavie, but we chose to walk along the scenic riverside path.

The trail ends at Fort William, where trains and buses to Glasgow depart. Two of us took the Caledonian Sleeper to London’s Euston train station. This was an interesting experience, but it was difficult to enjoy the scenery from the bunk bed in the small sleeping compartment, and the seats in the dining room and regular compartments were all occupied. The bed was very comfortable, but the train’s irregular, noisy motion made it hard to sleep. The train ran on time; we were woken with a cup of coffee shortly after 7 a.m. and had breakfast at Leons in Euston station before splitting up.

Cost

We booked everything ourselves and paid a total of 555 pounds each for all accommodation, two cooked breakfasts, and enough food for two communal dinners.

Route planning and Maps

Most people hike from Milngavie in the south to Fort William in the north. We managed to book a route where the longest day was 14 miles and most days were about 10 miles. We decided to book two nights at Glen Nevis, an hour short of the final destination, to allow us a day to hike up Ben Nevis if the weather was good. (It was not. I decided to make all my own reservations, as many companies that book trips use accommodation that is not directly on the route.

There are some “choke points” where accommodation options are very limited, especially at the north end. If you cannot get into the Inveroran Hotel and are not prepared to camp, you will have to hike 30 kms one day. At Kingshead, the best budget option is the bunkhouse, and the only alternative is to stay nearby at Glencoe. The youth hostel at Rowardenan is also a good place to book early. The youth hostel in Glen Nevis is also good, but there are other options in that area, or you can press on an extra hour to Fort William. Milngavie, Tyndrum, Kinlochleven and Fort William have multiple options.

Food

When we stayed at a hotel, we booked bed-and-breakfast and made dinner reservations, as the Drovers Inn and Rowardenan Hotel are in remote locations with no other dining options. In Milngavie and Kinlochleven, we stayed at places with full kitchens and cooked our own meals using food from local supermarkets. We bought a packet of instant porridge from the Tesco in Milngavie that lasted us to Glen Nevis, although some of us preferred the £6:50 cold breakfast at the youth hostels or a bacon butty in Tyndrum.

Pasta dinner at Kinlochleven hostel

Salmon dinner at Inveroran Inn

In the southern part of the trip, there were places to stop for lunch (especially in Balmaha), but in the northern part, it was necessary to bring some snacks or buy a sandwich at the hotel or hostel.

Packing List

There are luggage transfer companies, but we decided we would carry our own bags. My pack weighed about 20 lbs.

This is what I packed, and it worked out fine for me. The colours are just for my own reference! Also note that I was packing for a 10-day hike and another 10 days visiting friends and relatives. If I had just been hiking, I could have got away with fewer changes of clothing.

Backpack – Deuter Futura32 with built-in pack cover. This counts as cabin luggage. It was pretty full!

I also brought a lightweight nylon messenger bag that was my “personal item” on the plane, with the things I needed for the flight, and worked as a shopping bag, lunch bag and laundry bag at different stages of the hike.

Oboz waterproof hiking shoes. I think that trail runners would have been uncomfortable on the rocks around Loch Lomond, and above-ankle hiking boots would have been overkill, especially on the Military Road section.

Water shoes for use as slippers in the evening, and for very short walks to the shop or pub.

One hiking pole. This is just my preference; I like to keep one hand free for handholds, camera, etc.

One litre water bottle, plus a bottle of Coke on some days. I had a Camelbak water system, but it started leaking, so I threw it away. Unless you end up hiking in a heat wave, it is not necessary.

Rain jacket, waterproof pants, rain hat.

Woollen hat and gloves. I did not think I would need these but a couple of days I was glad of them. My gloves were not waterproof, so I only used them when it was not raining!

Thin puffy jacket

Mid-weight synthetic long-sleeved pullover (black)

Lightweight hoodie (black)

Lightweight long-sleeved t-shirt (blue)

Long-sleeved Smartwool t-shirt (green/grey), usually used for sleeping.

Long-sleeved silk t-shirt (black). This weighs almost nothing and crushes down small, but is slow to dry. I probably would not take it again.

Three lightweight, quick-drying synthetic t-shirts (two red, one blue)

4 pairs of quick-drying underwear

Two lightweight, quick-drying hiking pants, one pair of which could unzip to make shorts (grey and taupe)

One pair of very lightweight sweatpants (black) mostly used to sleep in.

4 pairs of socks. One thin, two regular hiking socks, one waterproof hiking sock

Personal items

Sunglasses

Electronics – Samsung Galaxy phone with Saly e-sim. Large and heavy battery pack (very useful when there is no bedside socket, but also to ensure the phone is working for navigation and safety.)

Whistle and compass – never used. Physical map.

First aid kit

Toilet kit including bug spray and sunscreen (each only used once)

I did not take a towel but had an absorbent scarf that would do at a pinch (at Tyndrum Trekker Hut). Most places provided towels or would rent them out for 3 pounds.

Food: Very variable. I often had some candy. Usually had fruit or protein bars. Often packed an apple and some cheese, or some nuts. Sometimes I bought a sandwich and a packet of crips.

CONCLUSION

The West Highland Way is an enjoyable, easy-to-moderate hike that would be great for someone beginning to do multiple-day hiking trips. There is cell phone service in most places.
