I wish you a very happy 80th birthday. I admire you for your success in business and your commitment to using your wealth and talent for the public good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


As a (scientist who has studied tobacco issues\/ person who used vaping to quit smoking\/ physician<\/strong><\/em>), I agree with you that tobacco smoking is one of the greatest threats to human health, and I commend you for your commitment to reducing death and disease from smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, you should reconsider your approach to less harmful nicotine products that help smokers quit, such as vaping and snus. Nicotine is not especially harmful to adults and even has some health benefits. It is the tar and carbon monoxide produced by burning tobacco leaves that kills smokers. The British Medical Journal<\/a> estimates that 6.6 million American smokers could be saved from premature death if they switched to vaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WHO, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and other organizations which you generously support should be waging a war on smoking, which kills people, not a war on nicotine and vaping, which are very much less harmful. Tobacco smokers who cannot quit using nicotine should have the right to switch to a less harmful nicotine product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your amazing legacy, based on doing so many achievements and so much good work, would be further improved if you followed the data and recognized the value of lower-risk nicotine products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
